Thomason Technologies Announces Software Solution to Protect Utilities from Cyber Black-Out

SpyGOOSE adds unique Layer 2 monitoring for ICS and SCADA networks — giving early warning to possible insider attacks and providing unprecedented detection of protocol attacks against critical infrastructure.

Thomason Technologies, LLC announces SpyGOOSE, its revolutionary, all American-made, intrusion detection system (IDS) for industrial control systems (ICS) and SCADA networks.

Industrial technology's quest for increased efficiency has exposed new avenues of vulnerability into systems traditionally independent of the internet. In many cases, these operational systems are now an unmonitored doorway to the entire network putting our critical infrastructure at risk. Utilities, water and waste water, chemical and petrochemical, and the manufacturing sector are just a few of the industries impacted by these vulnerabilities.

The possible disabling of electricity or turning off the water to thousands or even millions of people is no longer a Hollywood fantasy. In December 2015, 225,000 power customers were blacked-out for hours when a Ukraine utility fell victim to a cyber attack. Industry can no longer assume the their ICS systems have been untouched.

"Industrial control systems all over the world are surprisingly vulnerable to physical and cyber attacks. Unfortunately, the likelihood of a cyber attack is growing as the Internet of Things is increasing the risk dramatically. Perimeter defenses or an air-gap are no longer sufficient to protect critical infrastructure," said David Thomason, President and founder of Thomason Tech. "Eventually all networks will be compromised and only through comprehensive monitoring, advanced detection and rapid response capabilities is there a chance of preventing the attack from doing devastating harm."

Utilizing specialized functions for SCADA systems, SpyGOOSE monitors industrial control networks and integrates alerts with the existing security infrastructure. SpyGOOSE doesn't require a separate management or monitoring console as it integrates with firewalls, intrusion prevention/detection and Security Incident and Event Management (SIEM) systems.

SpyGOOSE has long been a component of Thomason Technologies' flagship product, the TTL1000, and is demonstrated as part of the Cyber Security Lab in a major research laboratory. Now, it is available as a stand-alone product. SpyGOOSE isn't a "stove-pipe" solution and is easily integrated with other intrusion prevention systems like Cisco's Firepower or Palo Alto Networks' firewall. SpyGOOSE is not only affordable, it is easy to deploy and easy to use.

About Thomason Technologies: Thomason Technologies was founded in 2007 by David Thomason, a veteran incident response and cybersecurity expert, to meet the need for experienced cybersecurity consultants across both the commercial and industrial markets. In 2012, after apprehending an advanced persistent threat (APT) in a utility company, Thomason Tech focused on developing and researching cybersecurity products more responsive to the rapidly changing threat landscape in operational and industrial markets. Cyber threats have evolved well beyond the capabilities of typical antivirus or firewall technologies. Thomason Tech provides its customers with an elite group of expert consultants coupled with products capable of defending the network and hunting threats that have evaded detection. Our goal is not just to sell a single cyber solution but to become our customer's trusted security advisor, building a relationship that adapts as the threat landscape changes.
